LEED Platinum certification for the iconic Catalana Occident building in Sant Cugat del Valles

The project

Grupo Catalana Occident, a leader in the real estate insurance and investment sector, has embarked on a comprehensive sustainability strategy for the sustainable certification of its existing and newly built properties. One of the most notable milestones is the intention to certify its headquarters at LEED Platinum Level, a reflection of the company's commitment to the environment and energy efficiency.

The iconic Sant Cugat building, built in the early 1970s, is the heir to a series of iconic constructions characterized by the display of bare building materials and structural elements as an expression of brutalism. The façade uses bare concrete and the exposed structure with sculptural forms as the most eloquent elements of this artistic expression.

The renovation project respects and enhances the heritage value and the exterior environment and seeks to connect the building's history with its future, creating a benchmark workspace. The highest sustainability requirements have been considered from the outset: integrated design process, energy efficiency, material selection, and user comfort. Regarding the execution, a complete monitoring of the installation and envelope implementation is being carried out in collaboration with the design and construction team.

Key Sustainable Strategies

  • Incorporation of renewable energy sources, such as photovoltaic systems, for significant energy savings.
  • Improvements to the building envelope that maximize energy efficiency and interior comfort.
  • Optimal use of natural light and control of solar gains to improve the building's energy efficiency.
  • Responsible water management through the reuse of rainwater and the implementation of SUDS systems that promote natural infiltration and reduce water impact.
  • Use of native vegetation that minimizes water consumption and promotes biodiversity.
