The Joan Miró Cleaning Centre is an urban infrastructure located under the Parc de l'Escorxador in Barcelona, designed to centralise the cleaning operations of the Eixample and Sant Antoni neighbourhoods. The building, half-buried and practically invisible from the park, houses the operational facilities for around 300 workers and a fleet of electric vehicles, from where the urban cleaning tasks are coordinated on a daily basis.
The project was conceived as a highly efficient municipal facility that minimises its urban and environmental impact by integrating energy efficiency, water management and electric mobilitysolutions. Thanks to these strategies, the building obtained the VERDE 4-leaf certification from the Green Building Council Spain.
Outstanding sustainable strategies
The building obtained the VERDE 4-leaf certification from the Green Building Council Spain, which recognises its high environmental performance and resource efficiency.
The semi-buried design minimises the visual and acoustic impact on the urban environment, integrating the technical infrastructure within a public park without affecting its public use.
The centre operates a fleet of around 60 electric cleaning vehicles, eliminating pollutant emissions during daily street cleaning in the neighbourhoods served.
The groundwater and greywater reuse system allows almost 100 % of the water used in certain cleaning operations to be recycled, significantly reducing the consumption of potable water.
